About

Shane is an award-winning artist based in Auckland whose work focuses on the exploration of texture and form through the medium of the vessel. He likes to push the clay surface and form to their limits, utilising techniques such as layering dry glazes and applying cracking and crawling glazes.

A key element of Shane’s work is its performative aspect, where he intentionally moves away from aesthetic traditions and norms to embrace spontaneity of form. This approach reflects his deep interest in Wabi, Sabi, Suki; the Japanese traditional notion of beauty, which can be described as ‘the beauty of imperfection’.

Shane’s creations are not only functional but also sculptural, aiming to communicate a sense of connection, honesty, and simplicity. His artistic vision is shaped by both Japanese pottery and the Western sculptural tradition, resulting in a unique blend of cultural influences.
